Trash or treasure? Analog Devices FM playing Doom and Doom2 music
Hello friends,
retro community don't like the Analog Devices FM.
And yes, in some games and in direct comparison it didn't held up quite well against its Yamaha competitor YMF262F / YMF289 - maybe also because we are biased to the original, aren't we?
In this Video I'll demonstrate the AD1812 Soundport playing
00:00 Doom E1M7 and
02:33 Doom2 M09
So made up your own mind and let me know in the comments if you like it or not!
The Analog Devices card of choice for this demonstration is the AD1812 card with the interesting amp cirquity. A quite uncommon solution, and another reason why I like this card. The output is absoltely noiseless and sound-quality is great of a card of that age and price-range.
Most common AD ICs are the AD1815 (SoundComm) and AD1816 (Soundport), both featuring the same internal FM as this AD1812.
Analog Devices is still in bussines and they offer great documentation of their products, also for legacy products, even today.
So you can find the datasheeds quite easily. For drivers, best thing is to go with unisound. Unisound in its latest version it detects and supports this card without any problems. Awesome!
On driversguide and other places you'll find the windows 9x drivers, so running an Analog Devices soundcard is not a challenge. As most people don't want it I'm pretty sure you'll find AD-soundcards for a reasonable price.
