The current World record for the longest underwater live radio broadcast is 3 hours, 9 minutes and 12 seconds and was achieved by two Australians Brendan Jones and Amanda Keller for the breakfast show on WSFM 101.7, from the shark tank in Sydney Aquarium, Australia.

There is a long-established rivalry between the British and Australians regarding underwater feats and not to be outdone, the Brits have fought back by smashing the World record bringing top honours back to Britain.

Amateur Radio presenter Maria Holland from BHR (Basildon Hospital Radio) 1287Essex FM presented her weekly radio show from a massive indoor tank. Whilst many DJs have taken their shows to various locations on roadshows, presenting a show from under the water uncovers some unusual challenges. Maria was fitted with a microphone and earpieces so that she could communicate with the ‘gallery’ responsible for cueing the records and the news as well as presenting her show. Oxygen was delivered via a sort of umbilical cord directly to her mask from air tanks on the surface which negated the need for her to change tanks. She did wear a backup tank which was available in the case of an emergency, but this was not used.

Being underwater for such a long period of time can be quite disorientating, so along with Maria, was a team of divers who competed in a variety of underwater activities, including darts and ten pin bowling which gave Maria something to focus on and talk about to her listeners.

Mario has only been diving for a year and during the week works as a teacher. She smashed the current Guinness World record for broadcasting underwater by achieving a time of 4 hours, 4 minutes and 23 seconds on-air (yet to be verified by Guinness book of records). She was clearly elated by her achievement as was the support team and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Unlike a commercial radio station, this world record attempt was created to raise money for charity.
