Following a well-received ambient EP for Amek Collective, Bulgarian born, UK-based electronics experimentalist V-Stok returns with six track EP on the techno and power electronics label DVNTT this time presenting a more distorted and sinister facet of his sound. As with the previous two V-Stok releases, the music is exploring the fringe areas of multiple genres, never quite firmly setting foot in any of the apparent undercurrents of noise, drone, techno, IDM while still retaining a familiar affinity with twisted atonal synth textures and atmospheres.
The title track ‘Insanity Check’ is a wild mash of rhythmic digital glitch and could be an Autechre tune run through a stack of Marshall amplifiers. ‘Crippling fear’ is a nervously stuttering beat on top of foreboding drones. ‘Cold determination’, the only track that can be considered as dance floor suitable, is a stripped down industrial drum n’ bass cross over belter. ‘Hills of Hope’ takes on a experimental bass music route with a very swung feel, it is also the only track that features any straightforward melody in the form of a melancholic synth riff which serves as a form of hook. ‘Instability’ is a poly rhythmic 180 bpm workout with a mesh of interwoven drones fading in and out. Finally, ‘Insanity Check (extended re-edit)’ takes a generous improvisational take on the otherwise quite brief original version of the track. The wild stylistic swings and apparently broad brush approach in sound design and composition are consistent with the overall concept of the EP, which is briefly stated in a note alongside the release.
‘Sanity check’ is a common term in engineering whereby an engineer would seek a peer to review their work to make sure that their reasoning is sound, that they have not suffered a lapse of reason and gone insane in their judgement. Reversing the concept – ‘Insanity Check’ is the constant self-questioning by an artists who seeks to make sure what they do is not sane i.e. not falling into familiar patterns, formulas and zones of comfort.
‘Insanity Check’ is out on 21.06.2019 on limited edition tape and digitally on DVNTT.
