City of Phoenix elected officials and Street Transportation Department staff will join with the family of the late Vernell Myers Coleman to unveil ceremonial street signs identifying the 7th Avenue and Buckeye Road intersection as Vernell Myers Coleman Way. The blue signs with white lettering will be mounted on the mast arms of the northeast and southwest traffic signal poles at 7th Avenue and Buckeye Road.

A community advocate and leader, Coleman passed away at age 71 on March 27, 1990 (born August 28, 1918). For more than 40 years, she worked to improve the lives of people living in poverty in Phoenix. Those efforts earned her numerous awards and honors from the State of Arizona, the City of Phoenix, and businesses and social organizations. In 1990, she was the first African American woman inducted into the Arizona Women’s Hall of Fame.

Coleman is also remembered for reviving the celebration of Juneteenth in Phoenix, doing so in 1968 as head of the Matthew Henson Housing Project Tenant’s Council. She was also instrumental in helping to organize the St. Mary’s Food Bank with founder John Van Hengel, and served on the board for several years.

Additionally, Phoenix’s Vernell Coleman Recreation Center (830 W. Tonto Street) is named in her honor.

Installation of the signs was approved by Phoenix City Council during its Formal Meeting on February 21, 2024.
