Yes. Yes it was. But at least I played almost every game on it to find out. JOURNALISM.

Sort of.

The Sega 32x released back at the end of 1994/beginning of 1995 in different territories. It's commonly believed to be rushed and an underperforming stopgap between the Mega Drive/Genesis and Saturn.

I decided to have a look at the add-on and figure out - by playing its games - just how much of that commonly accepted truth is true. Quite a lot of it, seemingly.

The 32x wasn't that bad - but games for it were either rushed out to capitalise on the device's release, or they were half-arsed because publishers didn't want their developers to waste time on something that was very quickly in its death throes. Honestly, one of the only games that takes advantage of the hardware is Virtua Fighter - everything else falls short.

It's a shame, honestly, and when the Saturn and PlayStation did come out in 1995, the 32x was already dead and forgotten.

At the same time, it really does deserve its reputation. Sad as that may be.

But hey, at least Sega rescued things by the time the Dreamcast came out, right?

Right?

No?

Oh.

Balls.
