Watch The Stabs MOVE Like Crazy on the F-22 RAPTOR!! ✈️ Locked Camera + Slow-Mo
The Freewing F-22 is a fantastic RC jet model aircraft, and this flight video illustrates and emphasizes how amazingly scale the control surfaces behave when the jet is set up with a neutral CG while making use of a well set up gyro!
You may be familiar with @mfingar's super-slow motion videos of the F-22 demo flights performed by Cabo Gunderson of the USAF. On those, the camera is locked to the airframe and video speed is slowed down so you can watch unbelievable close-ups of how all the control surfaces are moving throughout the flight, showing pilot and flight computers doing their thing, which is really mind blowing if you ask me... This video does the same but with a RC F-22 Raptor scale model, missing only the water vapour fluff, haha!
Contrary to popular belief, you can make RC models perform unstable and very close to what the full scale jets do (with some limitations, obviously).
There are a plethora of cool things to observe on this video, like the stabs counteracting excessive roll during the loaded roll maneuvers to maintain roll rate moderately low, as commanded by the pilot (who happens to be me, so I'd know, ha!). Another fun nugget is to realize that the stabs essentially act in short 'impulses' that initiate, regulate and finish the maneuvers, rather than having sustained surface deflections, but the jet essentially keeps its level flight / turning / maneuvering state otherwise, thanks to its neutral or slightly tail heavy center of mass balance. This is a mix of gyro and pilot operation.
This flight was performed at 'Club Aeromodelismo Osca', right after the Barcelona-Osca Jets 2023 international jet meeting. It is a truly amazing field with badass looking mountain backdrop, so I took all of my learned piloting skills and flew to the limit trying to capture some of the coolest RC Jet shots ever!
I am really happy about the footage we got, this is just the beginning, prepare for a lot more amazing stuff, keep tuned! :D

This was flight # (N/A - still gotta check, sorry) on 'Scarlett'.

Mind that although most of the jet is stock, I performed several modifications. Removed the infamous Blue Box and wing ribbon wires, passed individual leads to wing servos, mixed them all separately, removed pilot figure and nose gear light, installed a HE A3S3 gyro (which required physical servo reversing one stabilator servo, inverting motor and pot wires), added a green LED to make a fake HUD reflection effect, airbrushed the canopy to make it look more golden, like the full-scale one. Need to pick the sun at the right angle to show up though!
More details on my setup coming (soon?)!
