Westworld Awakening VR Gameplay Valve Index
A high quality, super tense, stealth, horror, puzzle, story amalgam of awesome. I know I'm a little biased but damn that was fun. Survios has once again raised the bar for VR.
Just a reminder that I don't know much at all about Westworld at all. That being said, I was still instantly drawn into the world. The visual fidelity and atmosphere Survios has created here immediately had me feeling a strong sense of presence. I don't normally talk about presence because few games actually invoke that sensation. Sneaking around that manor however, was incredibly tense. When a game nails presence... That's what VR is all about.
Also, I can't begin to describe how weird it was being so short.
Graphically the game was beautiful. At times it was a bit too dark. So dark as to not be able to see anything in fact... It definitely added a lot to the atmosphere as well as directing players towards the light but it's also a double edged sword if I can't see well enough to know where I'm supposed to be going. There was however a gamma slider in the graphics settings which I had set to the default of 35. For the manner I might have bumped this up but the lab was pretty much perfect.
I loved the audio. The voice acting was great. The ambient noises were subtle and added to the immersion rather than overpowering. The background music really set a tone of stress and tension.
The gameplay wasn't exactly what I was expecting and could potentially get a tad repetitive. Hide form big bad, get key, hide from big bad, open door, run from big bad, get some story. Repeat. I don't see this as too big an issue though as the story is absolutely the focal point. I will definitely say that I'm hooked and can't wait to finish out said story. I may even have to go look into the show....
The controls were extremely simple and streamlined. Trackpad/stick to move, grip to grab, right trackpad stick down to duck. That's about it. There were more natural interactions with the environment which I love to see. The squeezing mechanic just felt right and good. Grabbing a book case to pull it over was kinda just fun...
If I had any real complaints about the game it would be the very annoying clipping freeze mechanic that would randomly activate for mostly unknown reasons. It just didn't feel good for everything to abruptly grind to a halt simply because I moved a few inches out of my play space. I do get it and understand it more now that I've put some time in. It's incredibly difficult to have cinematic sequences if the player isn't where they're supposed to be. While it's jarring and immersion breaking, I can't think of a better way to handle it.
The game does feel like it's going to be on the short side with little to no replayability. i still think that I'm going to be fully satisfied after spending the $29.99. This is a rare high quality VR experience and feels like it's worth every penny.
Another fine Survios product.
Definitely a thumbs up.
