Showrunner Craig Mazin and creator Neil Druckmann hope that the remainder of the show will have something for anyone who watches—from newcomers to devoted fans of the video games. The sequel has even more material to cover than its predecessor—which compiled all of its events into the first season’s nine episodes. “This should be fairly obvious to anyone by now, but I don’t fear killing characters,” Mazin revealed to Esquire. “But the important thing to note is that neither Neil nor I feel constrained by the source material.”
Season 2 will take place five years after the first season. Joel and Ellie live in Jackson, but their relationship is strained after Joel confesses to lying about the Fireflies. The story follows Ellie as she seeks revenge after a tragic event involving Joel. The season will adapt The Last of Us Part II game.
We can most likely assume that the second season will follow the plot of the 2020 sequel game, The Last Of Us Part II, so folks who have played it might know all the stuff that’s about to go down – we recommend keeping the tissues close by for this one.
Showrunners have confirmed that the series will follow the game’s story closely. However, some adaptations may be made. There are plans for multiple seasons beyond Season 2.
The trailer begins with Ellie (Bella Ramsey) wandering through an abandoned building, seemingly hiding (or hunting??) from someone, before showing an unknown man’s arm and watch and shots of a makeshift graveyard.
Joel (Pedro Pascal) then appears in a new scene, asking “you OK?” to Ellie, who appears to be thinking about something, as well as a montage of clips of the pair living in the Wyoming settlement they’ve been living in for five years since the end of season one.
