Identifying the "first video game" is difficult since it relies on how you define a video game. Tennis for Two (1958), designed by William Higinbotham to entertain visitors at a scientific fair, was a strong early candidate. Another major game, Spacewar! (1962), created by MIT students, featured two spacecraft warring in real time on the PDP-1 computer. Computer Space (1971) was the first commercial arcade game, but its intricacy restricted its popularity. Pong (1972) was the first massively popular arcade game, which helped gaming attain public popularity. The Magnavox Odyssey (1972) was the first home console, and it included simple games. Earlier efforts, such as Bertie the Brain (1950) and OXO (1952), established the framework but were not actual video games.
