What's the point of this Stairway Sign?

I noticed this on my college campus, and I'm rather stumped as to the purpose of why they did this. I don't understand the reason why. If someone knows or wants to guess, feel free. I just have no idea. Maybe we can all learn something new.

Also, I should clarify some things: Even if this was done in case of medical emergencies to be seen in a mirror for some reason, it would still be spelled backwards even if reversed correctly. Also, it has this sign on all the floors in this stairwell, and it makes a bit more sense for the first floor since you could see it from outside, but you can barely see it on the other higher floors from ground level outside. Maybe it's for seeing what stairwell it is from the outside in case of a fire, rather than going inside, but even then, why put it on the part of the window that opens and is more likely to either break or be open, thus obstructing the sign?
