73Here’s a personal test I did before the start of Ralph Breaks the Internet. We had some downtime before the movie started and I wanted to get a feel for the character. I’ll post a process breakdown of this as well in the coming days. Happy Friday!
Animation Process! Thought I’d show a test where I approached it a little differently than the last one where I didn’t really use any reference. For this one I followed my reference quite closely, at least at the beginning for blocking.
1 - Here’s the reference I shot for this test. First off,this is from a few years ago so I look so different, wow!! I probably shot a minute or two worth of footage, I think I had a pretty clear idea in my head that Ralph would be at a “Bad Anon” meeting.
2 - First I did a really rough pass following the reference. I didn’t venture too far from it here just trying to find some of the main poses and any major changes in direction.
3 - Here is a full blocking pass of it. A little more information but still not too concerned about lip sync or smaller details. Because this was just a personal test, I had no directors to show, but this is when I showed the Ralph lead, Justin Sklar.
4 - Main note was to try and do something more Ralph-y with his screen right arm and to try and make his arms heavier in general.
5 - Tried something a little different at end, still trying to get the weight of his arms feeling better, the previous gesture was a little big and quick
6 - Added a lean back into the chair, this may have been Amanda’s suggestion. Added way more depth and contrast in his poses.
7 - Splines! Got everything one 1’s. Not really added any new info yet just cleaning what I had to see if it’s gonna work out okay.
8 - Added all the lip sync and went through and tried to polish some things up. Tried addressing any timing/spacing that may have felt even and floaty.
9 - This may be the exact same as the previous one but with his temp clothes. Usually at the very very end, I’m looking for any tiny pops, trying to keep things fleshy and avoiding dead zones, and checking arcs. I wasn’t totally satisfied with his gesture at the end but it was just a test so I left it as is.
