Name: Bethany Calderon Nickname: "Skeptic"Nationality: US Sex: female Preferred Class: Sharpshooter Background:An XCOM veteran from the first alien war, Bethany was haunted by the guilt of having panicked at a crucial moment in battle that cost the lives of her fellow squad members. As a coping mechanism for her guilt and having lost the war, Bethany started buying into the ADVENT propaganda and moved into the city centers. She eventually settled down and got married to Jon Calderon; a priest working for an ADVENT approved religious organization called ACE (ADVENT Church of the Elders). This cult was the brainchild of an alien collaborator by the name of David Skully, who founded the organization as a means to spread the ADVENT's message of unification in a way that would appeal to the far religious right. Together, Bethany and Jon would travel outside the city centers with other ACE leaders from settlement to settlement, spreading the word that the Elders (ethereals) were angels sent down by god to prepare humanity for the second coming of Christ. As part of the sermon, Jon and Bethany would often accept volunteers to be brought back to the city centers. These volunteers would be scheduled for gene therapy, pushed up the front of the waiting list, and returned home cured of any diseases or disabilities. ACE had been hailed as miracle workers in many of the local settlements, and even convinced most of the inhabitants to move into the citycenters. For a while Bethany seemed at peace, she had a loving husband, she was proud of the charitable work she had been doing for ACE, and she and Jon even had a son. However, things started to take a turn for the worst when a woman confronted Bethany, searching for her seven-year-old daughter, who was supposedly volunteered for the gene therapy program, only to be mysteriously dropped from the list, and never returned. In an attempt to try and find the girl, Bethany and Jon discovered that a good portion of settlers who’d been penned down as volunteers weren’t on the return list; meaning that about fifteen percent oftheir volunteers had mysteriously disappeared. David Skully was a well-respected member of the ADVENT coalition. He’d garnered a lot of good will with the Elders thanks to ACE’s success, and had been given a lot of political influence within the administration. When Bethany
consulted him about the disappearances that had been happening under his own organization’s supervision, he simply grinned and told her that he’d just sent someone to take care of the problem. She returned to her apartment a few hours later to find Jon dead and her son missing. Realizing that she’d been fooling herself from the minute she started listening to ADVENT propaganda, she made it her personal mission to find her son, and avenge her husband’s death. Bethany spent the intervening years doing mercenary work for various resistance groups out in the badlands in exchange for Intel on ADVENT’s nefarious activities. She earned herself quite a reputation as a professional sniper, tripling her kill count from a mere seven during her days with XCOM, to an ungodly 342 confirmed kills on her own. Whenever Skully got word that she was in town, he made sure toobstruct his windows and double up on bodyguards. On February 5th 2035, Bethany returned to her settlement only to be greeted by a tall dark stranger in a trench coat. The stranger, by the name of Nicholas Vance claimed to represent a large resistance organization that had been eyeing Bethany for quite some time. With the body of work that she had to show, Vance explainedthat the origination wanted to offer her a more permanent job as one of their new recruits. Realizing that this could be her best shot at making up for her past mistakes, she accepted, though little did she know that she was about to meet somefamiliar faces who were seeking redemption their own.
