I didn't realize it until I finished playing/recording part 10-12, but these parts are basically is a required subplot. I might go over this on part 13, not even sure, but the reason behind it is that Mario is known for saving Toadstool/Peach. Square keeps the tradition going and makes this a subplot for the game. The only difference is Bowser is not the culprit and is helping you (this is before others have kidnapped Peach). This is pretty cool if you ask me because it has been established that the main plot is not saving Toadstool/Peach, but stopping Smithy and his gang and repairing the Star Road.
