13C — NextFest October 2022 | Scars Above pt3 (Steam Demo)
1The surprise hit of NextFest 2022 for me (especially considering I'd never heard of it before), this game draws inspiration from Returnal and Remnant from the Ashes, creating a surprisingly compelling 3D sci-fi exploration shooter with some light soulslike mechanics and some wonderful challenge.
Plus there's a scanning mechanic. I love me a scanning mechanic.
Oh, and elemental combo attacks. Love those too.
While it's not the best-looking game in the world -- facial animations could do with work, and the main character looks a little generic and stiff, especially during the falling animation -- it's got plenty of atmosphere, to the extent that rather than sticking to my 'roughly 30 minutes of play' mantra, I ended up playing the whole 2+ hours.
Three-parter video it is, then!
