야마자키 류지

아랑전설 시리즈 및 KOF 시리즈의 등장 캐릭터. 최초 등장은 아랑전설 3로 이 때에는 중간 보스. KOF 시리즈에서는 KOF 97부터 등장한다.

오키나와 출신이며, 어렸을 때부터 부모를 여의고 고아원에서 자랐으며 그곳에서는 소문난 문제아였다고 한다. 13세 때 고아원을 탈주했으며 그 후 미군 캠프 근처의 군인들이나 불량배들이 모이는 환락가를 근거지로 삼고 불량배들과 어울리며 살아남는 방법을 배운다. 이 시절 야쿠자 간부인 소리마치가 미군과 무기 거래를 놓고 다투다가 미군 캠프의 복싱 챔피언을 일격에 때려눕히는 모습을 보고 그를 따르기로 마음먹어 소리마치의 밑에서 야쿠자의 삶과 가라테를 배우게 된다. 소리마치의 풍모는 배우 스가와라 분타를 닮았었다고 한다.

이후 소리마치를 친형님처럼 모시면서 따르던 야마자키였으나, 소리마치의 조직의 보스가 적대 조직과의 휴전을 위해 소리마치에게 전부 다 덤탱이 씌워서 적대조직에게 넘겨버리는 바람에 소리마치가 살해 당한다. 이에 열받은 야마자키는 모든 일의 원흉인 보스를 쳐 죽여 버리고 홍콩의 구룡성채로 도망가서 잠수를 타버린다.

그리고 구룡성채에 숨어살던 야마자키는 우연히 진의 비전서에 관한 소문을 듣고 비전서를 손에 넣기 위해 사우스 타운으로 향한다. 그러나 진숭뢰, 진숭수 형제의 사주를 받아 활동하다가 사우스 타운에서 테리 보가드에게 패배. 홍콩에서 여기까지 쫓아온 홍푸에게 체포 당하지만 운 좋게 탈옥해서 이제는 사우스 타운에 숨어 다니면서 눌러 살게 된다.

항상 회칼을 소지하고 다니며 게임상에서도 심판의 비수를 쓸 때 회칼을 휘두른다.

원래 설정상 아랑전설 시리즈의 무대, 사우스 타운에서 조직을 이끌며 무기 밀매상을 하고있던 단순한 조폭이었지만 SNK의 이런저런 대전격투 믹스 시리즈인 KOF 97에 추가되면서 뜬금없이 오로치 팔걸집이라는 류지랑 전혀 상관없는 설정이 덧붙여졌다.

허나 이 조치는 그야말로 설정에 "사실은 오로치 일족"이라는 글귀 한줄만 더 추가한 것 뿐으로 스토리상 비중은 전혀 없다. 이른바 각성 야마자키(…)가 등장한 것도 아니어서 이래저래 비난만 들었다.

하여튼 갑자기 발탁된 이유는 사용하는 기술들의 이름이 뱀술사, 큰뱀찢기 등등, 뱀과 연관되는 것이기 때문이고 결정타로 뱀술사 충전 시 나가는 기술 명이 오로치. 선정 자체는 아랑전설팀과 상담을 걸쳐 이루어졌다고 한다.

참고로 오로치 일족 설정은 KOF 한정이며 본가 아랑전설과 CVS시리즈에선 오로치와는 전혀 관계없다. 근데 아랑전설, 용호의 권, CVS가 역사 속으로 사라진 지금은 KOF의 설정이 정식 설정으로 굳어버렸다.

그러나 자신이 오로치 일족이라는 사실을 알았음에도 불구하고 자신만의 삶의 방식을 고수하는 야마자키는 자신들에게 합류하라는 나나카세 야시로에게 "나쁘진 않군. 하지만 부탁하는 방식이 틀렸어. 와도 괜찮다구? 그게 아니라 '이쪽으로 오셔서 저희들을 구해 주십시오!'겠지~~~!"라고 말하면서 오로치와 적대해 버린다. 게다가 "그런 놈이 있으면 박살 내는 맛도 있겠지!"라고 말하는 호전적인 면모도 보인다. 이에 야시로는 "이쪽도 처음부터 기대 하지도 않았다.... 일족의 수치가...." 이라며 깐다. 하지만 역시 일족으로의 각성을 거부한 가이델은 죽었지만 야마자키는 제멋대로 하는 행동이 오로치 일족에게 도움이 되어서 놔둔 듯 하다. 애초에 성격도 겉으로는 안 그래 보여도 각성하면 매우 잔인하고 난폭한 다른 이들과 달리 야마자키는 각성하든 안 하든 원래 난폭한 성격이라...


Ryuji Yamazaki

Ryuji Yamazaki (山崎 竜二, Yamazaki Ryūji) is a video game character from both the Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters series. In Gamest's 1997 Heroes Collection, Yamazaki was voted as the staff's fifteenth favorite character. He shared the spot with Samurai Shodown character, Galford, and Street Fighter character, Ken. In the Neo Geo Freak's 1997 Volume 8 character poll, he was voted as the seventh favourite character with a total of 1,206 votes. And in Neo Geo Freak's August 1998 issue, he was ranked as the 6th best character.

He is portrayed by actor Michael K. Hayashida for the Fatal Fury 3 live action commercials.


Personality

Yamazaki has psychopathic tendencies with a love for materialistic articles and money. He is the calm and confident gangster at one time, and a hysterical killer in another. He likes to bash, smash, cut, and kill everyone and anyone whom he confronts. These savagely cruel mannerisms were borne out of witnessing his father figure die in the worst way possible.

While not completely amoral, he is not above toying around as much as he likes to emphasize his dominating demeanor to anyone he encounters.

Of curious note is how Yamazaki subconsciously keeps his right hand in his pocket because his idol once praised the power of that particular fist, and only uses it for special techniques.

He doesn't want to be involved with Orochi and the Hakkesshu, and has been rebuked for his disinterest during the events of KOF97. Through his own sheer will and stubbornness, he manages to retain his mind against the Riot of the Blood's influence, something that others born under the Orochi blood cannot accomplish. Whenever he encounters any version of the '97 New Faces Team in any of their game appearances, Yamazaki laughs hysterically at them during their special introduction sequences, perhaps because he thinks of them as "weak" or "pathetic" for being under such influence.


Fighting Style

In contrast with most of the other fighters in combat video games, Yamazaki does not use any particular martial art - he is a self-taught brawler, and uses a wide variety of attacks in his fighting, including unfair and dishonest moves such as kicking sand in his opponent's eyes, and his ever-present-prized knife. He also rarely takes his right hand out of his pocket unless he is using his knife or other certain moves that involve his powers (especially his Desperation Moves; it is said his idol passed on the idea of praising one's dominate fist to Yamazaki which is why he normally doesn't make too much use of it), and a majority of his moves display quite an amount of strength from him.

Yamazaki fights with his instincts, much like a wild animal. He has little interest in technique, instead relies on brutal, vicious tactics to win his fights, such as headbutting and stomping his opponent repeatedly (though one technique he has involves an axe kick of possible karate origin). He also relies on messing with his opponent's head with the nature of his attacks, as well as even using hints of his powers as an Hakkesshu occasionally. Yamazaki is also known for his motif towards snakes, and is often compared to one himself.
