16. EU4 Dharma Let's Play - Cotton Candy Achievement - Part 16
1The 16th episode of my Cotton Kandy achievement run in EU4 Dharma. For this achievement you need to be the production leader in cotton as Kandy.
Kandy starts as a vassal of the kingdom of Kotte, so in order to not die we will have to break away from Kotte and then deal with the beast in the North, Vijayanagar.

In the early 15th century the island of Sri Lanka was ruled by the Kingdom of Kotte, with the Kandy paying tribute. After the arrival of the Portuguese to the Indian subcontinent, Kotte lost power to Portuguese influence. In 1521 the ruler of Kotte was overthrown by his three sons, who split his kingdom into three domains for each of them to rule. The Kingdoms were: Kotte, Sitawaka, and Raigama. Sitawaka was the strongest of these. To the north lay the independent Kingdom of Jaffna. The Kingdom of Kandy took the new weakness of Kotte to assert their independence.
Sitawaka invaded Kandy in the 1570s and the 1580s, and succeeded in conquering the kingdom and forcing the King of Kandy to flee north. The Sitawakan’s couldn’t maintain control of Kandy and Konnappu Bandara seized the Kandyan throne in 1594. The Portuguese installed a client king on the throne of Jaffna, and the Kingdom of Sitawanka disintegrated with the death of the king. The Portuguese moved into the former Kingdoms of Kotte and exerted influence over them, leaving Kandy as the only power on Sri Lanka that resisted Portuguese influence. Hostilities continued, and the Portuguese absorbed the Kingdom of Jaffna and secured their position on the island by building several forts. Kandy continued to resist, winning several battles and securing an alliance with the Dutch, who had recently established themselves in Batavia in modern day Indonesia.
Dutch-Kandy relations were always tenuous, but the two succeeded in forcing out the Portuguese from the island for good in the 1650s. Relations soon broke down when Kandy demanded a Portuguese fort that the Dutch controlled be given to Kandy. When the Dutch refused, the king moved against the Dutch but was defeated. The Dutch capitalized on rebellions in Kandy to capture large swaths of territory including the majority of Kandy ports. The Dutch controlled as much territory as the Portuguese had, but also had control of nearly all of the trade on the island, a major blow to Kandy’s finances. They warred with each other several times, with Kandy recovering some territory, but for most of the years until 1739 were peaceful.
In 1739 the Kandyan king died, and the throne passed to Sri Vijaya Rajasinha. Vijaya’s reign was relatively peaceful, but his son Kirti’s reign was tenuous, with Kriti having to deal with rebellions in 1749 and 1760. Despite these rebellions, under the two kings Kandy recovered several provinces from the Dutch. In 1761 Kriti launched a major invasion of Dutch holdings, capturing several towns before the Dutch counterattacked and captured their lost territories and more. In 1765 a peace deal was finished in which Kandy ceded all of their coastal territory to the Dutch, cutting them off from the outside world. Relations between the two were peaceful until the 1790s.
With the advent of the French revolution in the 1790s and the subsequent coalition wars, the British found themselves at war with the French client state, The Batavian Republic. Britain took the opportunity to seize Dutch possessions on the island, taking Jaffna and several other towns in 1795. Kriti died in 1796 and was succeeded by his brother Sri Rajadhi. He hoped to use the opportunity to regain lost territory, but the British refused to return territory and instead operated their new possessions as territories, establishing new systems of government and appointing their own governor. Rajadhi died in 1798 with no heir, and the former First Minister of Kandy took power by installing a puppet king on the throne. The puppet king, Sri Vikrama, soon seized the throne for himself.
Tensions came to a head when British subjects were physically beaten by agents of the First Minister. Britain invaded Kandy and installed their own king, but their grasp was tenuous and they retreated from Kandy but were defeated on their way back to Jaffna by Kandyan forces. Several fights took place between the two but neither side could overpower the other and a peace was reached in 1805. Vickrama’s rule was tenuous. In 1814 ten British subjects were captured and mutilated in Kandyan territory, and the British militarily moved against Kandy. The capital was captured, Vickrama was exiled, and the British made a deal with the nobility in which the Kingdom of Kandy ceded their territory to the British and operated as subjects to the Crown.
