Three members of a U.S. Marshals fugitive task force were fatally shot in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Monday during an attempt to serve a warrant, authorities confirmed. Five other law enforcement officers sustained injuries, with one reported in critical condition as of Monday evening. The suspect being pursued by the officers was also killed in the exchange of gunfire, though their identity has not yet been disclosed. During a news briefing led by Johnny Jennings, the Chief of Police for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the sequence of events was outlined. Chief Jennings stated that four of the officers wounded were members of the task force, with three succumbing to their injuries. The remaining injured officers were from the local police department.
The incident unfolded around 1:30 p.m. when the task force approached an individual's residence to execute a warrant for possession of a firearm by a felon. Upon their arrival, the individual opened fire, prompting law enforcement to return fire, resulting in the suspect being struck in the front yard of the property. As officers advanced towards the residence, additional gunfire emanated from inside the home. Following a prolonged standoff lasting three hours, Chief Jennings reported the discovery of two individuals within the premises a woman and a 17 year-old who were taken in for questioning as "persons of interest. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing as of Monday night.
Chief Jennings remarked, "Today is an absolute tragic day for the city of Charlotte and for the profession of law enforcement. Today, we lost some heroes. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper expressed his condolences and affirmed his administration's support to local authorities in response to the "tragic" shooting. Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles conveyed her deep sorrow over the incident and urged the community to keep the affected officers and their families in their thoughts and prayers during this challenging time. The Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force, collaborating with over 70 law enforcement agencies, is headquartered in Charlotte. Since its establishment in 2018, it has apprehended nearly 9,000 fugitives, according to its records. Chief Jennings, reflecting on the day's events, stated, "To me, it's the most tragic one that I've been involved in," drawing from his over 30 years of service in the department.
