For the most part, superheroes exist in a world a lot like ours, except they’re superheroes. That’s even more true for the Marvel Comics reality that centers its life around the real world city of New York, but with Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four and semi-regular invasions of bad guys. To bring the world to life on the big screen and show that the characters live in a world relatable to our own, they make references to pop culture. Sometimes, it’s just a shared experience, like Peter Parker listing our favorite movies as ways to defeat people, or Star-Lord and his handheld Defender game, while other times, it’s to imply that other major pop culture events happened in the Marvel continuity.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is rife with pop culture references and not just from Tony Stark and the Peters. Aside from the characters using references to create nicknames or perform dance offs against galactic size threats, there’s also the lives of the creators who themselves have a notable body of work. Sometimes, it’s a nod to how they got their start while, other times, it’s a shout out to people who gave the characters life in the first place. Either way, they’re nice little gems to find for the fans who are into more than just Marvel, if you can imagine such a thing. Plus, it’s nice to hear that the people behind the camera are just as geeky as the rest of us, so here are some great shout outs in the MCU.
