2016 FIAT 500X | Real World Review | Autotrader
It's safe to say that people are crazy for crossovers, and while their popularity is growing, the SUVs themselves are shrinking in size. One such example is a mini crossover with Italian flair, the 2016 FIAT 500X.
We headed to Durhamtown Off Road Resort to check out the 2016 all-wheel-drive version of the FIAT 500X and see if it can actually handle some off-road fun.
The 500X is offered with two engines and five trim levels, but the 500X Trekking and Trekking Plus versions are the best options for anyone looking to hit the dirt.
This Trekking Plus model is fully loaded and runs around $33,000 all in. Powered by a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder, the FIAT 500X Trekking Plus has decent pickup and handles well on a variety of road surfaces -- that's no surprise, considering it has the underpinnings of its cousin, the Jeep Renegade.
As far as off-road capability goes, the 500X has just 7 inches of ground clearance and no underbody protection, which means it's clearly not designed for intense rock climbing, so steer clear of deep ruts and large rocks just to be safe.
However, this little crossover is equipped with a few off-roading essentials. Available 18-inch wheels and dynamic traction control provide more confidence on weekend excursions. Switch to Traction mode to maximize low-speed traction on low-friction and off-road surfaces. And, of course, this 500X features automatic all-wheel drive, which kicks in when you need it.
Being a FIAT with Italian roots, the leather upholstery is exceptional, of much higher quality than we'd expect. Although the rear seat is a little small and better suited for kids, the optional dual-pane sunroof makes the cabin feel less confining. There's plenty of cargo space for your weekend gear, as long as you fold down the split rear seats.
With regards to safety and tech, the 500X has a lot going for it. Standard equipment includes the easy-to-use Uconnect infotainment system with available navigation. Features, including a Wi-Fi hot spot, hill-start assist, a wide-angle backup camera and park assist, can help you on your daily commute, as well as when you're on the trail.
We also like the available rain-sensing wipers, an unexpectedly high-end feature for a subcompact under $35,000.
From what we've seen, the 2016 FIAT 500X is sporty, fun to drive and packed with upscale amenities. This little crossover is a pleasant surprise, especially at this price point.
