2017 LEGO Chess - Unboxing, Speed Build & Review - 40174
I'm unboxing, speed building and reviewing the 2017 LEGO Iconic Chess Set! Sounds boring, but this is actually a really nice LEGO set and great value with almost 1,500 pieces for just $55 and will keep you busy building for a couple of hours. LEGO Chess is set number 40174 and was released in 2017.
LEGO has released many chess sets before, including LEGO Pirates Chess from 2015, LEGO Kingdoms Chess from 2012 and the epic Giant LEGO Castle Chess release in 2008 which now sells for mega money on eBay but LEGO Chess 40174 kicks aside the theming and nails a solid brick-built chess set which you can play chess with and not have pieces dropping off over-elaborate chess pieces.
The LEGO Chess board is built from 1x4, 1x2 and 2x2 LEGO tiles with a stud in the center of each square to stop the chess pieces sliding around. The board is built on four LEGO base plates which detach to reveal storage for the LEGO chess men and a set of checkers pieces which I'll get to shortly.
The Chess board also splits into two halves and can be stacked for storage which, coupled with the space within for the playing pieces makes it a very practical LEGO set that you can use, not just a decorative display piece. It's not all utilitarian and there is some really nice ribbon decoration on each of the ends from which LEGO Chess is played. Of course, the decoration requires small LEGO elements which does help to boost that part count.
LEGO's chess men or chess pieces are decorative but solid builds and easily recognizable as the chess pieces they are designed to be. We have traditional black and white chessmen but with nice color accents, dark red for the black pieces and dark blue for the white pieces. Each is accented with metallic gold and silver LEGO elements including a cupcake crown for each Queen.
LEGO Chess also comes with a set of counters so you can play checkers but these are very small and simple playing pieces and a bigger piece would have made for a more satisfying game of LEGO checkers (or draughts in Europe).
This is not just a LEGO Chess review video; I also cover the box art, the LEGO Chess unboxing experience and include a time lapse LEGO speed build, in 4K ultra high definition.
I really enjoyed building and reviewing the LEGO Iconic Chess Set and will definitely be using it for a few games of chess. If chess isn't your thing, it's a great source of LEGO parts including metallic studs and black and white tiles. $55 for 1,500 pieces is a good deal.
