20Genesis is no longer without a dedicated electric vehicle, as the brand pulled the wraps off of its GV60 SUV. The little electric hatch, which shares its underpinnings with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, wears bodywork that ... well let's just say it's interesting. Who knows, maybe the looks of this new Genesis will grow on us in time. There are certainly many small details that warrant praise. This includes the car's clamshell hood that envelopes the front fenders, its trick C-pillar decor, and its smart-looking rear hatch, which includes a nicely integrated rear spoiler. At least the car's interior looks stylish, elegant, and seemingly appointed with a number of rich materials. While we doubt the side-view cameras and accompanying interior mounted screens will reach our shores, we're very certain the EV's "Crystal Sphere" shift lever will. The lever serves as a mood light when the car is off, per Genesis. Turn the GV60 on and the shifter does a little dance and flips over so the driver can switch between Park, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive.
Unlike its Hyundai and Kia kin, which offer either a smaller 58-kWh or a larger 77-kWh battery pack, the GV60 will come strictly with the latter unit. Genesis claims the pack offers the GV60 up to 280 miles of range on a full charge in single-motor rear-drive form. With 225 hp, the entry-level GV60 ought to offer sufficient scoot, too.
That said, the luxury brand plans to also sell the small electric SUV with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system (one motor at each axle). Going this route boosts peak output to 314 horses, but lowers the estimated driving range to 249 miles. If you need more power, though, then Genesis is happy to oblige with a more performance-oriented variant of the GV60 that produces a peak of 483 ponies from its two electric motors when the car's Boost mode is engaged. Once the 10-second spurt of the Boost mode is used, the GV60's motors default to a peak output of 429 hp. No surprise, the most powerful GV60 suffers from the worst driving range, with Genesis projecting 229 miles of driving on a full charge. Take too much advantage of the model's estimated 4.0-second 0-62-mph time, and the GV60 will surely lose significant sums from its outright range. Admittedly, these figures are for the Korean-market GV60 and Genesis may alter the outputs, driving range, and powertrain choices for the U.S.-market model.
Genesis is keeping mum on the car's pricing and availability in North America, too. Nevertheless, we wager the GV60 will sticker for north of $50,000 and enter our market sometime in 2022, likely as a 2023 model year vehicle.
