[2/3] ..zaps into Realms of Chaos - side-scrolling, 256 color VGA, adventure & action game from 1995
I will say that this game got me upset in the end. I was very excited to play this game as possibly the last side-scrolling game from Apogee. And what starts out as a great adventure (well, sorts of) gradually fizzles and the game turns into complete and utter foolishness with each level progressing. Like what the... man?! What happened here?? It looks like the developers themselves fell into the Realms of Chaos (..lmao, that was a good one, eh?). Also like other episodic Apogee side-scrollers, this one follows the trend of only the first shareware episode to be good (to hook you in for you to buy it) and then the rest are -blows strawberry-
The penultimate (level before last) is seemingly broken and you can't get into the last level with a skeleton boss which is completely broken as well. But thankfully with the use of some integrated cheats, the game can be finished. What I really think happened here is that the developers started this game possibly in 1993 when side-scrollers were in full fledge of popularity and when they got into 1995, everyone ran out of steam and lost interest in actually finishing this game properly.
By that time, the industry and trends were not popular with the likes of side-scrollers anymore, it was a lot of Doom, PlayStation and Quake on the horizon. I still think this could've been a good production if treated with enough care and passion all the way through the end. As it stands, this game was a shameless slap in the face regarding the respect of the player buying it and a 3/10 gem experience for me. However, the obsessed game-hog which I am, I have still played it through to the end - so there :p
