2D-X.com's Features Editor Gabriel Zamora presents his impressions of the latest Dark Souls II Beta test, and highlights many of the changes to From Software's "Soul" series. Dark Souls II makes significant changes to the Dark/Demon's Souls formula, while still adhering to the core gameplay mechanics that define the games.

Some of the more significant gameplay changes are as follows:
Backstabs have been redesigned to function as a strike.
Dual-wielding weapons are now viable and effective.
Ripostes have been expanded upon and rebalanced, including a new guard-break/riposte mechanic.
Melee combos are much more defined.
Players can now heal themselves with their own items when summoned or when invading other players.
Projectile game has been improved significantly, with crossbows and magic spells now capable of manual aim.
Magic comes in greater variations, with stance affecting the strength of a spell.
Magic restorative items allow players to restore their spell uses without having to rest at a bonfire.
Stats augmentation and their effects on a character's performance has also been reworked. An "Agility" stat and "Vitality" stat allow players to directly strengthen their action/evasion speed and their equipment burden, respectively. Many other stats have been given additional functions and uses as well. Dexterity, for example, improves the effectiveness of agile weapons, but now also improves the effectiveness of poisonous and bleed-inducing attacks.
Dark Souls II makes much greater use of lighting as well, and many of the areas within the beta require the use of torchlight to make effective progress. This adds to the haunting and menacing atmosphere that has defined the Soul games in the past, and adds a new layer of gameplay to the series.
Dark Souls II is scheduled for release in March next year (2014).
