This game originally came out in 1994 and I was a kid back then and so I came in possession of the original shareware version which was available at that time on one 3.5 inch diskette hehe given away for free at some computer store called Babbage's, Computer World or Egg Head Software, I forget which.. I was drooling over the 3 diskette full 5MB version featuring (as we can see in this game) sweet-looking colorful, smooth-scrolling parallax 256 VGA color graphics mmm... and with stereo Sound Blaster or Adlib music and sound FX. Yesss, sign me up for that please! :o)

And now I can finally play that full game I was yearning for.. and how is it? It's pretty good I think. It's entertaining and colorful and offers interesting gameplay with different 2D digitized monsters and a variety of different colored tiled levels. Speaking of levels, some of the later levels are a bit difficult and may need an extra playthrough or two in order to get through them. Because since you are moving you can only see where you're going 1/2 screen at a time and the little wizard walks pretty fast and he can easily stumble across some ambushes by the monsters here hehe. So I would recommend a slower walk sometimes and with caution because cumulative little chips at his health will spell out death and you'll probably have to replay the level after that point lol. The deceiving thing about this game is that it looks like a kid's game but it's really not, because if you relax too much and don't take it seriously and in consideration the dangers here, and don't pay (careful) attention to your surroundings here, you will succumb to your death as the monsters will eat you up eventually lol.

In the end I give this game 9/10 gems because I think it could've been better with more variety. Also for a 1994 game release, I think computing was more advanced at that time and more could've been done with this game graphically and gameplay wise. Just look at The Lost Vikings by Interplay which was from 1993 and Jazz Jackrabbit which was from 1994 also, they feature more diverse levels and animations. There were probably other games too from that time period which surpassed this one technologically, like Lion King, I just remembered haha. And so to me I think Hocus Pocus looks more like a 1990-1992 platforming game at most and not a 1994 one :/

But for what it is the game is pretty good, interesting and humorous and I did enjoy it and finally finished the game I yearned for as a kid ;p
