"The Evil Within" was released in 2014 and was the last horror game, which legendary horror developer Shinji Mikami wanted to do. Thanks to this "my last horror game" attitude, Mikami presents a "best of" of everything the genre has to offer. The gameplay is inspired by "Resident Evil 4" and feels like the real "Resdent Evil 5". The set pieces are some of the most gorgeous ever seen in a horror game and the game has almost everything : creepy village, creepy mansion, mental hospital, serial killers etc. Pretty much everything the genre has to offer can be found in this game. The story is also one of the more fascinating ones, even while the big revelation is not very surprising. The game always gives the player not enough ammo, which forces a lot of Stealth gameplay onto the player and leads to some very frustrating moments. Even while the game is in many ways a masterpiece, it is often unfair, frustrating and sometimes annoying. Some of the design choices by Mikami are very weird and leave a bad taste in the end.
A flawed horror masterpiece, which could had been so much more.
