Creating a functional submarine isn't an easy task. They have to float like boats but also sink and come back up again all while remaining stable. The technology has evolved heavily over the years, and plenty of times countries have been able to get it right. Others, not so much. Here's 5 of the worst submarines ever built.

0:00 - Intro
0:52 - Farfadet-class
2:27 - Pravda-class
3:49 - British K-class
6:57 - CSS H. L. Hunley
10:35 - Soviet K-19

"The Farfadet-class submarines were a group of submarines built for the French Navy at the beginning of the 20th century. There were four vessels in this class, of the Maugas type. They had little success in service and were converted to other use after the loss of two vessels in diving accidents. All were disposed of prior to the outbreak of the First World War."

"The IV-series big submarines were designed to serve as an underwater support to groups of battleships during their long-range operations. They had to follow battle groups at high speed (22-23 knots) surfaced and to engage attacking hostiles submerged. IV type submarines had a high-speed adapted external hull and rather heavy artillery. The concept was ready in October 1930."

"The K-class submarines were a class of steam-propelled submarines of the Royal Navy designed in 1913. Intended as large, fast vessels with the endurance and speed to operate with the battle fleet, they gained notoriety and the nickname of "Kalamity class" for being involved in many accidents. Of the 18 built, none were lost through enemy action, but six sank, with significant loss of life, in accidents. Only one ever engaged an enemy vessel, K-7 hitting a U-boat amidships, though the torpedo failed to explode with what has been described as typical "K" luck; K-7 escaped retaliation by steaming away at speed."

"H. L. Hunley, often referred to as Hunley, CSS H. L. Hunley, or as CSS Hunley, was a submarine of the Confederate States of America that played a small part in the American Civil War. Hunley demonstrated the advantages and the dangers of undersea warfare. She was the first combat submarine to sink a warship (USS Housatonic), although Hunley was not completely submerged and, following her successful attack, was lost along with her crew before she could return to base. The Confederacy lost 21 crewmen in three sinkings of Hunley during her short career. She was named for her inventor, Horace Lawson Hunley, shortly after she was taken into government service under the control of the Confederate States Army at Charleston, South Carolina."

"K-19 (Russian: К-19) was the first submarine of the Project 658 (Russian: проект-658, lit: Projekt-658) class (NATO reporting name Hotel-class submarine), the first generation of Soviet nuclear submarines equipped with nuclear ballistic missiles, specifically the R-13 SLBM. The boat was hastily built by the Soviets in response to United States' developments in nuclear submarines as part of the arms race. Before she was launched, 10 civilian workers and a sailor died due to accidents and fires. After K-19 was commissioned, the boat had multiple breakdowns and accidents, several of which threatened to sink the submarine."
