Black Ops 3 is both absolutely brilliant and utterly baffling. The most baffling part of the game is easily the campaign. The psychological and heady approach to the story is something that could absolutely work in another context, but the execution was extremely confusing. On the flipside, Zombies was at a creative high point. Shadows of Evil, Der Eisendrache, and Gorod Krovi are often considered in the top 10 or even top 5 maps of all time, and Zetsubou no Shima and Revelations aren’t too far behind. Plus there’s Zombies: Chronicles and developer supported mods for PC. Multiplayer is where things get complicated. The core gameplay was a huge improvement over Advanced Warfare, but the player base just wasn’t accepting of this new style of gameplay, and opinions only soured as the loot boxes got more and more predatory. There were some other niche experiments like Free Run, Nightmares, and a new Dead Ops Arcade, but they never got much traction and weren’t supported much after launch. Overall, Black Ops 3 was a decent game for the time, and easily the best of the Advanced Movement era of CoD, but it doesn’t hold a candle to series’ high points.

How the score works: It's just a simple rating out of ten. A score of five is a neutral feeling. A score of ten is all positive feelings, with a score of one being all negative feelings. A score of ten doesn't mean there aren't small faults or bugs in the game, or features that would have been cool if they existed. It just means either those faults or bugs haven't affected me or don't detract from the experience in a significant way.
