665: ClassicRogue SDL \\ Yetis in the Dark! & other adventures
Playing ClassicRogue SDL version, 2/27/19, Windows build: a port of the classic dungeon crawling original Rogue--which started the "roguelike" genre--with nice modern options. Open source and free from http://sites.google.com/site/donnierussellii/rogue
0:00 - start
0:22 - run 1
43:18 - run 2
1:09:51 - run 3
1:14:05 - run 4
2:01:08 - wrap-up & what's next!
- That potion I drank at 23:57 was a long-lasting (runs out 27:47) Potion of Blindness--really messed with me, in part because levels after the first few are so dark anyway (and tunnels are always dark), I couldn't tell what it had done at first
- Run 1 was nuts in terms of items. Tons of rings early, and I forgot they increase rate at which you get hungry! AND I was finding NO FOOD. Started fainting from weakness due to hunger at 35:32. Eventually remembered the ring thing but still couldn't find anything to eat. Finally starved to death (mid-zombie-fight) at 42:08. Yeesh. : oo
- Pixies or whatever they (1:47:56) aren't don't attack unless you attack them, like leprechauns. Accidentally struck a leprechaun once here, that sucked. : P
- A couple deaths from lazily mashing the rest button or something like that and losing a critical turn, oyyy. (Would resting in the dark with the number of rounds input work? In a light room, it doesn't wake you up if an enemy appears, until they're on top of you--but it is when they're next to you, or when they attack you? If next to, there'd be no penalty, in effect, for using it in a dark area, since you can only see enemies when they're right next to you anyway.
- Multiple mistakes right at the end 1:59:08:
-- Relying on a staff I knew was lightning, but had not identified so I didn't know how many (ie few) charges it had left
-- Didn't stop and rest to restore HP
-- Unexpected yeti abundance in a single room! = oo
-- Tactical error of sweeping back toward the door in exploring half the room, so the yeti I ran into was between me and the door
-- Tactical error of not at least testing if retreat from a yeti works (could have swapped armor potentially)
- I gotta keep track of the depth at which I stop encountering aquators, if I ever do (one on 12 here, at least 1:51:17). Is it actually 18 like I guess I read a few weeks ago (it starts at 8), or is it less? 'Cause it can start getting real rough fighting other monsters in your weaker set of armor.
- Should probably hold on to scrolls of identify until I have an item I *really* need to know about right away
- Love that packed monster/item room at 1:12:54
- Tactical error trying to retreat from an ice monster down a long straight hallway!
- Really not impressed with bow, at least at level 1 (1:14:47)--and later you're in the dark all the time, eh
- 1:37:14 - confusing that when wearing a ring of sustain strength and getting bit by a rattlesnake, so the ring prevents strength loss, you get the message "a bite momentarily weakens you"; probably would have been better just not to have any message there
- There are mazes! 1:49:39
- "Warm all over" is a potion of restore strength, I think I just read on the internet 1:54:10
- Do Ice Monsters give a lot of XP? Seems like I leveled up an awful lot killing them
