7th Opening Day Start; 27th No-no, 26th Perfect Game; New record for Most No-no & K's in Opening Day
The Washington Nationals begin the new season with the biggest signing of their new Ace, who makes his debut in his new home of the Nation's Capital, Washington D.C., as he looks to join Hall of Fame pitcher Jimmy Key with 7 wins, the most wins as an Opening Day starter. He has the chance to be the first and only pitcher to have the most no-hitters in Opening Day history. Also, he can break the career record for most Opening Day strikeouts, surpassing the Hall of Fame pitcher Randy Johnson AKA The Big Unit of the Arizona Diamondbacks. First, he has to lead his team on the field in the Home Opener against division rivals of the NL East, the New York Mets.
There are quite a few similarities between the New York Mets and the Washington Nationals. For starters, both teams are members of the National League (NL) East Division. Both franchises were established in the 1960s and they’ve have won their division a number of times, which speaks to the competitiveness between the two teams. The Washington Nationals won the NL East Division in 2014, however in 2015 it was the New York Mets who topped the division. 2016 was the year when the Nationals came back and won their division again.
They have met on Opening Day on 4 occasions in their rivalry and the Mets hold the Opening Day advantage 3-1. This will be the 5th Opening Day encounter between the division rivals
