A quick Steam Deck performance test Grotesque Tactics Evil Heroes - it works!
There is a lot of videos on YT with various games tested on Steam Deck. Most of them present the footage of the screen and how the game looks ON Steam Deck. Some people, however, use their Steam Deck as a desktop PC or a regular console. My tests intend to show how the game looks and performs on an external screen, in full HD (not in 4k for performance reasons) with certain scaling options.
Grotesque Tactics Evil Heroes is a weird one - it's a hilarious and cheesy turn-based RPG in which the miserable main character (Drake) joins forces with the Holy Avatar in their cliche quest to save the kingdom. How? By finding allies and creating an army - preferably of fair maidens with bows. The game doesn't even try to be serious in any departments - you can hear a clear ripoff of "The Shire" from Lord of the Rings at the end of this video. But somehow Grotesque Tactics is an example of the good ol' times when the gaming industry still was a wild frontier and a free-for-all.
So, I remember finding this game years ago on a "shady" torrent website. I started playing it and decided it was uhm... unusual for the time. Several year later I purchased the game and its sequel on Steam, for "retribution" purposes (I actually purchased almost all of the games I pirated as a kid). I also wanted to give it a second chance but the game just simply would not work on modern systems. I tried Windows 7, no luck, I tried Windows 10, no luck either. Since there is little information on the web on the game itself, I couldn't find a solution other than "it simply doesn't work". Then after I purchased a Steam Deck, I gave this game another shot. I tried launching it but it kept getting back to Steam, as if it wouldn't even try to load. Then I switched to the desktop mode and tried again, the game downloaded some redistributables and... it worked! Hence this test to all of you few people who ever heard of this game and wondered if it is playable on the Steam Deck :)
The game is marked as "unsupported" on Steam Deck but it actually works as you can see :) The graphics seem a bit "smudgy" but trying higher forced resolutions should fix this issue. I also kept the 4:3 aspect ratio as you can see. The game works, so I think it would be possible for you to set the game to your liking :)
