So! As a big fan of the Game Boy Advance, when I wanted to run a quick test to see which screen was the closest to the newest emulation by NERD for the Nintendo Switch, I accidentally discovered that the GBA emulator on the Switch runs FASTER than original hardware. How odd!
So I ran tests on all official outlets that GBA can be played at. the OG GBA (recorded live on camera), the Nintendo GameCube Game Boy Player, the Nintendo DS (also recorded on camera), the Ambassador Program's GBA releases on Nintendo 3DS, the Wii U GBA Virtual Console, and the Nintendo Switch's GBA Nintendo Switch Online application. As you'll likely see, there's several things to notice, particularly how the Wii U's footage keeps up at the exact same speed as a stock GBA, same as a Game Boy Player, the Switch release going faster than the stock GBA, and the DS and 3DS slowly lag behind. The GBA's refresh rate is of 59.73 Hz. My theory is that the Nintendo Switch is overclocking to reach the stable 60 Hz, while the DS is underclocking to round the refresh rate down to 59.7 or 59 Hz. instead. As for the Ambassador Program, my theory for why it lags behind as well might be a remnant of its own DS mode. But you'll see in the video itself, too.
I captured the footage for the handheld consoles using an iPhone SE 2020 at 1080p60. The footage from the 3DS was taken from a new 3DS capture card, caught at 2x 60FPS, provided by SebasContre (https://www.twitch.tv/sebascontre). The remaining footage was captured with an AVerMedia LGP Lite at 720p60. Footage was timed for all videos when the frame for the timer in each of them changed from 0:00:00 to 0:00:01 on all versions. I also had to render this video FOR OVER 13 HOURS DANG IT.
