19In the vein of continuing to make video game essays, especially about games that I have caught my attention I have decided to make a video about a cool text based video game I bought during the Steam Summer Sale. The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante (In full The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante In The Fall Of The Blessed Arknian Empire), is a game that encompasses struggle, growth and the life of a character who you help mold. I think being able to take a step back and play a game that is extremely deep but not overwhelming is what makes text based games a true treat, especially modernized ones such as this one! I have over the years molded my game taste to various different niches, and one which I have continuously been amazed by is text-based games especially with new and modern spins on them. The life and suffering of Sir Brante is one of those games that takes a decades-old genre and brings to life with modern feels, interactivity and even a bit of voice acting (just a little bit haha). In this game you play as xxx Brante, the name is self chooseable and I went with William because it just sounded right, in the empire of Arknia, while I will not spoil to much of the story, we go through Decades of Sir Brantes life and in the process learn more of this mysterious world with divisions between “lots” or estates similar to prerevolutionary France with Nobles, Peasants and Clergy which separate the purposes of peoples lives (of which you have 4, meaning you can die 3 times but the fourth in this world is known as “real death” and will be the end to your existence), the division between races, which there are at least two I know of, the humans and the Arknians who are slightly blue and much “better” (they claim) at most things, finally there is divide between religions, if you should follow the current gods, or reform and maybe even replace them. The story brings us to choices between who we want to be in this world, with some help if you are noob like me and want to be guided through with indication numbers. We follow strive and despair, within our own story, the story of our family and of the empire itself and are given dozens of endings and ways to proceed. I think text based games help remove lots of the extreme complications of many modern strategy and 3rd person games but still give you lots to think about and act out upon! I did pick the game up on the steam sale and would recommend you pick it up once it goes on sale again, while it was an enjoyable experience I would say 15 to 20 hours maximum with a second playthrough, it is a 5 dollar pay not a 20 dollar pay. I want to continue to play through more text based adventure and empire games and would greatly appreciate any suggestions in the comments down below!
