1Hydrophobia is an action-adventure game set in a dystopian near-future world where overpopulation has led to a global crisis. The game takes place on a massive floating city known as "The Queen of the World," a self-sustaining luxury ship designed to house the wealthy elite and offer refuge from the overcrowded planet.
The protagonist, Kate Wilson, is a systems engineer aboard the vessel. She's haunted by past trauma, specifically the drowning of her family, which causes her intense aquaphobia (fear of water). Her fear becomes central to the game's plot as the ship is attacked by a group of terrorists known as the "Neo-Malthusians," who believe the only way to save humanity is through drastic population control.
The terrorists sabotage the ship, causing massive flooding and widespread destruction. Kate must confront her deepest fears while trying to survive the flooded environment, save the remaining passengers, and uncover the terrorists' motivations. As she navigates through the sinking ship, she uses the environment and water physics to her advantage, solving puzzles and fighting enemies.
Throughout the game, Kate also uncovers hidden truths about the ship and its role in the world's overpopulation crisis, leading to a greater conspiracy that ties into the larger societal issues the game explores.
The core gameplay revolves around Kate's ability to manipulate water and her resourcefulness in using the environment to outwit the enemies in this tense, waterlogged setting.
