Revisiting previously played games is nothing new for this channel and Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies (or Distant Thunder) is one that I have always wanted to replay.

Attempts have been made in the past yet circumstances have stopped me from completing Namco's spectacular "flight-sim" on the harsher difficulties (Hard, Expert and Ace). Looking back, there were a lot of other things I wanted to fix in those original Ace Combat 04 videos too - including aiming for S grades on missions.

You might notice I am experimenting with a couple different things in the video capture department with this run as well, including different scanline, sampling and deinterlacing methods. Whether I commit to using any of these in future playthroughs is something I have yet to decide on, although I am taken aback by how they appear on Youtube when encoded at 4K.

Ace Combat 04 is still as absolutely stellar now in the 2020s as it were when it first launched early in the PlayStation 2's lifecycle. Namco had a way of making games look timeless in their presentation and this 2001 release is no exception to that rule: It has incredible visual design, with a unforgettable soundtrack and responsive controls. Ace Combat had already maintained a high-bar thanks to the ever-ambitious Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere (which unfortunately was botched in it's international release) but Ace Combat 04 set the frame-work for the series' peak going forward into the sixth generation.

The lasting influence of both Project Wingman and Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown has reinvigorated alot of my love for combat flight-sims of this nature, although they similarly make me reminisce of a simplier time in gaming. Call me rose-tinted but, back then, variety was king and everyone was pushing what was possible from the unique hardware of the day. To say Ace Combat 04 was a distinctive experience on PlayStation 2 would be taking it lightly.

Oh, and as before, it has to be stressed that I am no professional. My skills (or lack there of) and video capture may very well differ compared to some of the other Youtubers out there although, rest-assured, this is the full fat Ace Combat 04 experience being presented here, minus game-over screens or retries anyway.
