Adventure Island II is a side-scrolling platform game for the Nintendo Entertainment System that was developed by Now Production and published by Hudson Soft in 1991. It is the sequel to Adventure Island and the second game in the series for the Nintendo Entertainment System. While the first Adventure Island game was an adaptation of Sega's Wonder Boy arcade game, Adventure Island II, like all subsequent Adventure Island games, is an original work. Outside of Japan, a portable version titled Takahashi Meijin no Bouken Jima II or Adventure Island was released in 1992 for the Game Boy.
The rules of the game are the same as in the original Adventure Island, with the addition of an inventory system being the main new feature. Before beginning a stage, the player can choose which of Higgins' animal friends to bring (if any have been rescued), as well as whether or not to bring one of the stone hammers he has amassed. As a result, when the player selects a second hammer, he can no longer upgrade to shooting fireballs. Instead, it is added to the player's inventory as a reserved hammer.
