No commentary playthrough of a full Premiership Season in EA Sports' AFL 98 (PC, 1997) playing as the Western Bulldogs with two minute quarters.

Round 1 vs Fremantle Dockers.

After enjoying my Finals series of AFL 98 last year, I thought I'd give a full Premiership Season a go. I decided to play two minute quarters for this series to make the games a bit more intense and try to limit complete blow-outs. Once again, I try to play a very attacking and free-flowing game, which sometimes works really well but sometimes means I miss easy goals. As an added bonus, I will be tracking the goal kickers each week as well.

AFL 98 was EA Sports' first attempt at making a game for Australian Rules Football, and I remember there being a bit of media hype around it at the time. And the game itself is actually pretty decent, considering that it is now over 25 years old. Having a fully licensed AFL product with accurate teams and player names was big, and a fully voiced commentary provided by Bruce McAvaney was huge. Unfortunately, EA Sports discontinued the series after AFL 99 due to sales (as there is really only one country in the market).

Getting this game to work properly on Windows 11 was the same as Windows 10, but still needs a trick or two. In short, I had to run Windows XP on a virtual machine (I used Virtual Box) and then use an original game CD to install and play, making sure Passthrough is selected in Virtual Box. The real kicker, however, is that the game freezes up on loading the main menu which is only fixed by ejecting the CD and re-inserting it. It appears to be the result of trying to load the CD music issue, as no music plays on Virtual Box.

For the first video only, I started the game using a Windows 98 virtual environment in PCem, however the performance wasn't good enough for the game itself. So enjoy the menu music in the Round 1 video!

I did not make this game (or any of it's assets) and I do not claim to. I do claim recording the gameplay and associated commentary.
