Google adds visual results to AI-powered search
Google is making its AI-powered search tool, AI Mode, more interactive by adding visual results. Launched in May as a text-only experience, AI Mode now provides image-based responses for queries like shopping or creative inspiration. The update leverages Google Lens, Image Search, and Gemini 2.5 technology, delivering clickable images linked to retailers. With competitors reshaping search using generative AI, Google aims to make searches more intuitive and visually engaging.
Meta to use AI chat data for targeted advertising
Starting December 16, 2025, Meta will use conversations from its AI chat tools to improve ad targeting and personalize content across Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms. Users in the UK, EU, and South Korea are exempt due to privacy regulations. The move means interactions with Meta AI text or voice will influence ad delivery alongside traditional signals like likes and follows. There’s no opt-out unless users avoid AI features entirely, though sensitive topics will remain excluded. Meta’s goal is to automate ad creation and delivery by 2026.
WhatsApp update brings Live Photos, AI features, and more
WhatsApp has rolled out a major update for iOS and Android, adding new personalization and sharing tools. iOS users can now send Live Photos, while Android supports Motion Photos short clips with sound and movement. AI-powered chat themes and video call backdrops let users get creative with designs, and new features include extra sticker packs, improved group search by contact name, and a built-in document scanner for Android. Most updates are available immediately, with some AI enhancements rolling out gradually.
Snapchat to charge for Memories storage above 5GB
Snapchat is introducing charges for users who exceed 5GB of storage in its Memories feature. Those over the limit can pay $1.99/month for 100GB or $3.99/month for 250GB via Snapchat+. Users will have 12 months to either pay or download their content. The company says most users won’t be affected, as they stay below 5GB, but the change has already sparked backlash. Since its launch in 2016, Memories has stored over 1 trillion saved posts.
Thinking Machines Lab launches Tinker for easier AI model customization
Thinking Machines Lab, the $12B startup co-founded by ex-OpenAI leaders including Mira Murati, has unveiled Tinker, a tool designed to simplify fine-tuning of advanced AI models. Tinker handles complex tasks like GPU management and training optimization, allowing researchers, businesses, and hobbyists to customize models such as Meta’s Llama or Alibaba’s Qwen with just a few lines of code. Backed by $2B in funding, the tool aims to democratize frontier AI development. Murati calls it a “game-changer” for opening up model customization to a wider audience.
