Welcome to a non-commentary playthrough of the original Ace Combat (Air Combat as it was named outside of Japan), where I'll be going through each of the game's 17 sorties and doing my very best to ace a lot of bogeys!

I have set myself some conditions for this run: Hard difficulty, no damage and (if possible), destroy any non-targets or as many as I can. I'm also using certain planes for certain missions. All of this is to try and unlock a bunch of achievements through the RetroAchievements website, just for some extra 'ace pilot' cred.

STORY:
Following the successful defeat of the rebels' attacking force, matters now turned to launching a true counter-attack. Donet City, one of the major cities in the Skully Islands, had been under rebel control for a significant amount of time. Any operation to wrest control of the city back would have proven harmful to the residents still trapped there, unable to leave due to the rebels' presence. Fortunately, a recent evacuation effort opened up an opportunity for the loyalists to strike back. Scarface Squadron was given one task; take out the rebels' HO and comms network to sow discord and panic amongst the defenders, allowing friendly forces to easily retake Donet City. Due to the nature of the mission, Phoenix opted to launch in an experimental stealth fighter, the F-117A, in order to catch the enemy off guard.

BRIEFING:
"Up until now, our offensive missions have been constrained by the presence of civilians in Donet City. A recent evacuation of that city permits us to engage hard targets within the city perimeter. Target 1: Computer communications center. Target 2: Enemy Headquarters building. Night conditions should neutralize enemy ground fire. However, the city has at least three interceptors available. We have no intelligence on force composition. From now on you will have a wingman assigned to you. Inform him of the operation before departure. Good luck!"

Designated aircraft: F-117A Nighthawk

MY THOUGHTS:
So, two things. I will NOT be using the wingmen through this playthrough. They cost too much money and.....they pretty much do nothing. I think they can distract the odd enemy fighter and sometimes get a kill or two, but it's really not worth having them there.

Second, the F-117A is the absolute worst fighter in the entire game. It was done dirty, the real life version was much more capable than AC would have you believe! However, I think it looks cool and actually suits the type of mission. I always loved the night strike vibe of this along with the awesome music! That said, doing this with no damage was VERY tough. I had to skip a lot of non-targets to pull it off, because the good old Nighthawk turns like a bus...
