AKAI SG01K General Midi Sound Module playing retro-games music
Hello Friends,
today we have a closer look on the AKAI SG01k General Midi Sound Module.
I looked a while for a fair priced module, and this one was cheap because the seller lost the psu and therefore could not test it. The power connector is very small and 10v are fairly uncommon, so i couldn't find one of my others. I ended up soldering wires on the connector internally and connect another 12V 1,5A supply - with success!
The AKAI SG01k one of the less-known modules that surely had tough competition with the Yamaha MU and the Roland Sound Canvas series.
But back in the 90s every company related to prfessional music equipment seem to have at least one GM-Module - so Akai did as well.
Internals weren't extraordinary - 8 MB waverom with 16bit samples and 189 instrument sounds, 124 percussions and 30x polyphony - specs that meet/surpass the GM specs.
Internal ICs are mostly NEC based. Connectors are Line-In/Line-Out, headphones and of course MIDI IN-/Out-/Thru.
With the white coloured chassis and the 3-digit red LED display, AKAI did their own style instead of copying the reference. I like the look very much.
The setup: Intel Pentium II 266MHZ Intel BX Windows 98 system, Terratec 16/96 (ES1868f) soundcard. Module connected thru Gameport/MIDI. Tracks played directly out of the Games in DOS-Promt.
The Games music is:
Track 1 : Settlers 2 Track 13
Track 2 : Descent II Track 4
Track 3 : Rise of The Triads Level 1
Track 4 : Doom II Into Sandy's City
Track 5 : Doom I Episode 1 Level 1
Track 6 : Doom II readme
