Update: I've since done the bass mod and the bass is now hitting lower. It's still not X1 levels of bass but certainly nicer with a meaty punch where needed. The good thing is this mod does not affect any other area of the sound so mids and highs remain the same.

I imagine AKG covered up the bas sport for other reasons like releasing a v2 or using the same internal setup on higher models without the port being blocked.
