Title: Notti d’Oriente (Oriental nights)
Genie: Marco Manca [singing]

Audio source: Blu-ray

In the animated movie, this has always been my favourite song and it’s always bothered me how short it eventually turned out. So, I’m glad they opted for a longer version for the remake, even though a more engaging visual sequence wouldn’t have harmed. Too bad.

The lyrics of this version are generally copied very closely from the Italian adaptations of the animated movies Aladdin and Aladdin 2, with scant minor changes.

At 0:27, the lines “He won’t be able to stay still, on a carpet off he goes / Into Oriental nights will he go” are almost copy-pasted from the original lyrics (the first part read actually “On a carpet, off he goes / Where to, he knows”, but the hand gesture the genie makes in the live action demanded to move the word “carpet” forward in the passage), but the issue is the same: I’ve never understood who the subject of these lines is.

A side note I would like to add on the use of the term “Orient” (“Oriente”): differently from English, the word has never borne any negative connotations in Italian, but is rather considered an elegant synonym of “East”, used in a higher register. The lack of any bite from the word is probably linked to the very close relationships most countries in Italy (the history of Italy is that of a very fragmented territory) have always had with the many different realities that have existed in the Near and Middle East, which resulted in a long-term, if not always pacific, coexistence that brought most Italian cultures (they are several, each with its own history of international relationships) to look at the region more as a neighbouring rather than some mystic and far-removed reality.
For these reasons, the term “Oriente” is usually regarded as a neutral-to-positive, if a bit generic term (again, it’s a synonym for “the East”), holding no negative nuances in the Italian language.
Fun fact: varieties of Arabic were spoken for a very long time in certain areas of Italy, especially in the southern regions (the Maltese language is a still living example of that legacy), and still nowadays the languages spoken in those same areas bear several marks of that period, with tens of loanwords surviving to this day, especially in the Sicilian language.
