"...Rance... It's too late after you lose it. Nothing in this world should be taken for granted."

It has been claimed that "Sengoku Rance does not have a good story", especially in recent times where more games in the series are available for the English reading audience, and R10 has since been released, considered one of the masterpieces of not just the series, but the Visual Novel medium as a whole.

I suppose it is true that the main plot of SR, where a sealed demon is unleashed and takes his revenge on those who sealed him before being defeated for good, is not one that is particularly engrossing even back in the day.

But I think it's no coincidence that the poignant moments in the game are the ones where the characters process their grief and loss - whether it's Kou realization that she will never again spend time with her brother, Souun's decision to become a monk, unable to move on from the death of his fiancee, and Rance losing the long-time companion that he believed would always be by his side, this musical track would be here to accompany these characters in their moments of self-reflection.

While Kenshin is quite a popular character and I suppose that's what important to many people in the end, I always felt sad that her plotline was essentially entirely changed from the original draft (when SR was originally planned to be a regular RPG, rather than the Strategy game that it ended up being.) - to something I felt was a lot more shallow.

In that scenario, Rance was hired to act as an imposter and body double for Shingen Takeda due to his untimely death, which would cause severe political turmoil for his people if the news broke out.

(In this version, Shingen is an actual person compared to his portrayal in the actual game where he existed as a made-up figure in-universe)

Shingen and Kenshin had a Romeo and Juliet like relationship, being in love despite being on opposing sides of the battlefield, and when she went to investigate rumours, she discovers a man with the face of the one she loved... yet this man was boorish, uttering words and performing deeds that were vile in her eyes, completely unlike the gentle, kind man that she knew so well. She's unable to cope with the loss of her long-time lover, speaking to the replacement as if it were the original, yet being angered in the process due to their inherent differences.

The emotional climax of the plotline? When she finally refers to Rance by his actual name, accepting him as his own person, and finally moving on.

"It's too late after its gone."

So always cherish the time that you have, before its inevitably taken from you.
