Hartwood was a wealthy artist who lived in a mansion called Derceto in New England. Carnby arrives at the mansion to find it in a state of disrepair and soon discovers that there is something sinister going on.
As Carnby begins to explore the mansion, he encounters various supernatural creatures and must use his wits and limited resources to survive. He finds clues that lead him to believe that Hartwood was involved in occult activities and was trying to summon a powerful demon known as "The Ancient One."
As Carnby delves deeper into the mansion, he learns that there are other people in the house who are also trying to uncover the truth behind Hartwood's disappearance. He must work with them to uncover the secrets of Derceto and stop the summoning of The Ancient One before it's too late.
Throughout the game, players must solve puzzles, fight off monsters, and gather clues to progress through the story. The game features a unique "inventory management" system, where players must manage their limited resources carefully to survive.
Alone in the Dark: Prologue serves as a prequel to the original Alone in the Dark game, introducing players to the world and characters of the series and setting the stage for the horror that is to come.
