Alone in the Dark - Unhinged Innovation
So I recently played Alone in the Dark and man that game is crazy. Very much the product of a lot of big ideas and what was likely a very torturous development cycle. It's very reminiscent of that period when the emphasis in games was on becoming more cinematic and realistic. This game, along with Resident Evil 5, Grand Theft Auto IV, and Metal Gear Solid 4 were the frontrunners of this movement, but unlike those games, Alone in the Dark kind of faded away into the background. Every once in awhile I'll see someone bring it up in a comment thread or something but for the most part it seems to have been forgotten about.
It's a pretty cool game, but it's held back by some weird design at parts and a lot of technical issues (especially on the PC version). I actually wasn't even able to finish it because I had to reinstall windows and after that it wouldn't launch. Because the game is fairly obscure now, there weren't any resources to fix the issue which sucks. If you wanna try it out, which I do ultimately recommend, either get the console versions or emulate it.
