American Truck Simulator 1.28 working with Saitek R440F Steering Wheel
Here's quick guide on how to get the Saitek R440F Steering Wheel on American Truck Simulator.
1. Download 64bit drivers here:
http://www.downloadwindowsdrivers.info/file_ids/27186.html
2. First, connect your steering wheel to a usb port on your pc and plug in the power adapter to an AC outlet. Now run the install drivers.
3. Now UNPLUG the Saitek wheel power adapter from the AC outlet. Run American Truck Simulator. Go to 'Settings' then go to 'Controls' and DISABLE 'Force Feedback' by unchecking it. Now save and exit game.
4. Now PLUG the Saitek wheel power adapter into an AC outlet and then run American Truck Simulator. A notification will pop up asking if you want to use the wheel as a mouse, select 'Ignore'. Now go to 'Settings' and then 'Controls' and change the setting from ' Keyboard only' to 'Keyboard + Saitek R440F Wheel' and then scroll down and select 'Use as Wheel'. Configure the steering/gas/brake axis with your wheel and then save your game. Now you can enjoy driving with the ol' hardware and your game won't crash! Also works on Multiplayer.
NOTICE
If your wheel keeps crashing on any other games then follow the guide below as well.
Crash Issue Fix:
After I installed the drivers, I went into the Devices and Printers section in the control panel, right-clicked on the R440 Force Wheel, and with it plugged in, I hit' Remove Device'. This DOESN'T delete the drivers, but will force the device to be reinstalled when next connected.
Then, I went into the registry and found the relevant keys: HKEY_CURRENT_USER - System - CurrentControlSet - Control - MediaProperties - PrivateProperties - Joystick - OEM - and in here, I deleted any folder which had the VID_06A3 prefix. I also did this in PrivateProperties - DirectInput but am not sure if that was necessary (there is mixed advice on the web).
I then pulled out the USB connector and stuck it into a different port on the PC. It installs and drops right back in. When I opened the control panel I maxed the setting which controls how hard the wheel tries to re-centre, but felt no difference. When I tried one of the force feedback tests, it STILL crashed, but I got a snippet of the test sound playing this time, and the wheel stiffened up. That was it, after that I could launch Dirt 2 or Project Cars, ETS 2 and everything worked perfectly, including FF.
