DESMO

Prologue – Ignite

Just an hour’s drive from Los Angeles’ city center, Remolacha, California is widely considered by its citizens to be a haven. Bereft of the smog and noise of the town that employs them, the settlement is aptly regarded as the development of choice of those moneyed enough to move out of LA, but not wealthy enough to live like a celebrity. Given that the ex-sugar beet farming town was so close to being just another McMansion development, the locals are more than elated to be granted token reprieve from the gyre of the area.

Unsurprisingly, the Oxnard suburb was well regarded as the “happy ending” for the many stars spat out by Hollywood the moment they tanked. Without the antagonizing presence of tourists or the paparazzi, it only takes someone with a modicum of financial shrewdness to guarantee their chance at buying a property there. Of course, the sprawl of single-story houses didn’t mean their residents were still willing to indulge the ability to flex their accomplishments. After all, they did have the means and the desire to do so.

Among the houses, one such California ranch betrayed the presence of its most storied denizen. Despite its modest façade – brick walls, healthy lawn, and single garage – the vehicle parked there was the sole clue to the proprietor’s identity. A vintage Italian motorcycle, approximated by the local gearheads to be developed towards the end of the ‘80s, painted in an unmistakable shade of bright marmalade and showing a shockingly moderate reading on its odometer. Apart from a description that would only likely allure bike nerds and bike thieves, it’s what’s engraved on the handlebars that many consider to be the question’s smoking gun: “NV + SH”.

Meanwhile, a day trip up the coast, a common link could be found in a place almost antithetical to Remolacha. Oleada, California, once a splinter off of Salinas, is a hamlet many consider to be hemorrhaging. Apart from a few gas stations, a motel, and some rest stops to ensnare sightseers as they crawled along the Pacific Coast, the town itself is teased by the locals to be an inhabited unincorporated community. Still, with just enough money coming in to cover costs, Oleada was able to eke out a niche amidst the relentless waves and damp granite of the Santa Lucia Mountains.

Fittingly enough, Oleada Trailer Park is perhaps the closest the area can get to beachside luxury. Apart from its neon sign showing every year of age since its opening, the trailers within are surprisingly well maintained. Respectable amenities, controlled rent, and an exclusive cliffside stairway to the beach below are common talking points its tenants give as to why they moved there. Retirees, scandal magnets, and bohemians alike managed to find an escape in the isolation Oleada provided.

Nevertheless, the presence of a red Ducati 848 lying against one of the trailers was reason enough for the park’s residents to grow suspicious. Ignoring the busted café racer collecting dust under the underutilized car port, it was unnerving enough to see a superbike amidst the pick-ups and sedans of the area. Sure enough, like its orange sister to the south, the same five characters were present in the same location on the handlebars. Eagle-eyed observers noted that, indeed, the owner was passionate enough to shakily scratch the message onto his trashed racer with his pocket knife: “SH + NV”.
