Chapter 2 – A Son Also Rises

When she saw Firmin and Franco together after the bullfight that June day, Haizea noticed three things. First, that the lanky matador was easily a head taller than the Generalísimo. Second, how onyx his hair appeared as he blanched during the actual handshake. Third, that it was safe to assume that he direly needed an ear to bend, preferably with someone who could swiftly understand the root of his awkwardness. Deciding that there was no harm in checking in, Haizea intercepted the young man as he was about to leave the arena as night dawned. Even if it went awry, the chances for lasting damage were slim.

Sure enough, Firmin became reflexively relieved when took notice of the fan who bothered to check in after such a cringeworthy event. Yes, he had often leaned into the playboy elements of his status and rarely spoke out against the romantic praise of his admirers. Indeed, his notoriety as a cad had made him quite the polarizing figure on the dating scene, despite his attempts to distance himself from his unceremonious past. Haizea, however, was a different story.

“Haizea made June 9, 1954, a far more bearable day,” Firmin recalled in one of his last interviews. “To think I responded to her compassion with bloviating about my bloodline not shortly afterwards. ‘My father’s hardy Aquitani pedigree’ this; ‘my mother’s links to legendary medieval arbalists’ that. All it took was just a doubtful glare to abandon that standard, a dissolution that was far more impressive.” As if to confirm, Haizea sensed something special in Firmin, his humility and integrity glowing once he eschewed the pretentiousness. That evening, a bond would strike between the two that would remain ironclad.

As months of dating became years as an item, the romance between the couple accelerated. Their commiserations galvanizing his confidence, Firmin noticed the dour picture coalescing as more and more details of Haizea’s youth were coaxed out. Knowing the turmoil that she had been going through since her time with the Pyreneans, he did what he could to provide a listening ear and support for her own healing process. Perhaps the best example of this was when Haizea asked about why he had chosen the pet name he had for her, an exchange that would be a watershed moment.

“I’d always heard the term ‘honey’ whenever someone talked about their significant other,” Haizea wrote in her diary, not long after her sixth wedding anniversary. “Instead, Firmin took a liking to calling me ‘vid’. This was just after I confided in him about what I did with Taup, so I initially assumed he was using it as a shortened form for ‘Vidkun’. In retrospect, it’s ridiculous that I jumped to the conclusion that he was using it as a pejorative, given that he was actually talking about grapevines. His explanation was a rambling story about how the most weathered, ugliest vine one of his farmer uncles owned grew the healthiest and sweetest grapes in his the entire vineyard. Saccharine as it was, I read between the lines that I struck gold with Firmin and welcomed ‘vid’ as his empathetic byword for ‘querida’.”

Not long afterwards, Haizea became more determined than ever to excise the baggage of her past. In 1956, she enthusiastically traded in “Pregónes” for “Hielo” after a fairytale day at Santa María de la Asunción. Meanwhile, she had accepted the role of handling the business side of her husband’s new mechanical enterprise, realizing that her acumen with numbers would be better suited there than as a secretary for the resistance.

Of course, as Haizea and Firmin established their own foothold, the opportunity arose to eliminate the last albatross around her neck – whom she considered to be her true family. Sure enough, on March 22, 1958, that chance arrived, weighing four kilograms, fifty-four grams and measuring just under forty-seven centimeters. With the last immediate links to her bloodline cauterized, Haizea Borrosa-Hielo embraced her newborn son, Sergio Hielo-Borrosa, and her new life with ironclad conviction. Of course, as babyhood morphed into childhood, the reins would soon be passed on to the next generation.
