An Elden Ring review over 4 months of texts with a Souls newbie friend
2On 24 Feb. 2022, the day the review embargo of Elden Ring was lifted, and a day before the game was scheduled to release, my gaming friend and I were texting each other, our excitement rising with each "10/10, masterpiece" rating on metacritic.
We both had been following the Elden Ring hype train and the online discourse over FromSoftware's next big game for over 2 years. We had both dabbled with Souls games in the past but had been put off them by their steep learning curve.
But this time, we surmised that we were on the brink of a generation-defining moment in gaming history, and we would kick ourselves later if we failed to be a part of it. And so we both bought the game--he on PS5 and I on PC, of course (#pcmasterrace).
This video here is a complete transcript of our texts over the next few weeks, extending on to months later. As we kept playing, exploring, learning the game, we kept sharing and updating the other.
Since I haven't edited this text trail, some personal info in it that are irrelevant to Elden RIng might have seeped in. Please ignore them and respect our, and especially my friend's, privacy, even though we are voluntarily putting this video out there on the web.
