Rangbhoomi', a Films Division production is centered around a semi-autobiographical play written by the father of Indian cinema, Dadasaheb Phalke. Rangbhoomi follows director Swaroop as he attempts to trace the contours of Dadasaheb Phalke's life in Varanasi after he withdrew, disillusioned, from the world of cinema and decided to take up theatre. In Varanasi, Phalke wrote a semi-autobiographical play titled 'Rangbhoomi' which forms the core of this cinematic exploration. Rangbhoomi intertwines the personal engagement of Kamal Swaroop with Phalke's journey and the play, deploying vibrant sounds, sights and characters in a surreal palette.
