There are few ways that sum up my childhood than Majesty; before I became the humble procrastinator you know, I used to be filthy rich, never left my castle and would frequently build my palaces two doors down from the local portal to hell.

Now while I do enjoy not worrying about my demonic next-door neighbours ravaging my friends and family, I do get nostalgic for the good old days. So come with me on a journey back to 1500s Europe, where Dragons still roamed and mages weren’t all burned at the steakhouse for being witches.

Set in the traditional fantasy world of Ardania, Majesty puts you as the greatest genius royalty of all time, that of the Sovereign, most famous for building their castle in the middle of nowhere, next to the local skeleton kings palace. I don’t know why we can’t be happy living away from the murder-raping demons, but what do I know, I’m just some retard that hasn’t been molested in the last 5 minutes.

The main mechanic of the day is base building, and depending on what you build varies what motley array of heros will be at your disposal, whos classes vary from rogues that can pillage corpses for gold, to wizards that purge everything with fire, but get melted by anything above a slight breeze against their skin. Your job is to spam build as many of their houses as possible in the hope that ONE of them goes after the murder-raping demons. And yes you inferred correctly, you have no real control over these heros. The only real control you have is with bounty flags, which if you spend enough gold, eventually some lazy sack of shit will explore or kill whatever needs looking at/murdering. Standard fair for management games really.

So theres a variety of options and choices for you as a player to use, but when you can’t control your units, you got to ask how good the AI is. And oh. Oh boy is the AI a mixed bag. AI has two modes in Majesty, either bloody useless coward mode, or, the AI goes absolute berserk HAM, attacking until either they or the enemy is dead. Wizard HAM is particularly glorious, as everything just explodes in a glorious rain of fire. But there are just waaaay too many times heros don’t follow through logically, like going full on attack mode into situations they can’t win, or retreating from an easy fight, or attacking something much farther away than the enemy knocking down your expensive as fuck town. Even putting a bounty on something doesn’t always work, you have to dump half the cost of your palace just to get these snooty fuckers to even take a whiff of that ratman tearing down your blacksmith.

I’ve been avoiding the obvious for the past X minutes here, so lets get this out of the way. Yes, Majesty is old enough to engage in sexual congress with, though I don’t see why you’d ask that, as its certainly an aged and ugly teenager. Yeah lets not sugar coat this, Majesty hasn’t aged well, but it is functional and it isn’t a chore to look at, which counts for a lot. You can easily tell whats going on, enjoy the spectacle of a big brawl, while also having some effects being almost pretty, like wizard spell spam. The variety in hero designs is also fantastic, with everyone having a distinct look that fits what they do, so you can make a reasonable guess what someone does without foreknowledge. So all in all, it’s a bit above average in all honesty.
